Valdivia is a city located in southern Chile, in the Los Ríos Region, approximately 800 kilometers south of the capital Santiago de Chile. It is located at the confluence of the Valdivia, Calle Calle, Cau Cau and Cruces rivers, in addition to bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west.

It was founded by don Pedro de Valdivia, Spanish conqueror, in 1552, under the name of Santa María la Blanca de Valdivia. It was a strategic place for the Spanish forces with direct access to the Southern Pacific Ocean, so it is surrounded by fortifications to protect against enemies from other crowns, and against indigenous people in the area.

On May 22, 1960 it was affected by the largest earthquake recorded in the history of mankind, which registered 9.5 on the Richter scale.

It has a population of approximately 166,000 inhabitants, being classified as a university and tourist city.

Symposium's place: Universidad Austral de Chile

The Universidad Austral of Chile was founded on September 7, 1954, in Valdivia, as a response to the urgent need for a higher education institution in the south of the country. It currently has more than 18,000 students.

Located in Valdivia -in the south of Chile-, the Isla Teja Campus is located in a privileged natural environment where modern buildings, traditional constructions, leafy trees and ample green areas converge to invite reflection and study. With a privileged view of the river and the city, in this Campus, which has 106,366 square meters built, transdiscipline is experienced since eight of the nine faculties of our University share in this university city.

Known nationally and worldwide, the UACh Botanical Garden is one of the main attractions of this campus, which has a beautiful access mall. Created in 1955 by the Founding Rector Eduardo Morales Miranda, this natural space has more than 950 species and has several sections: myrtaceae garden, proteaceae, communities of Central Chile, Magellanic forest, medicinal plants, Chilean conifers and Valdivian forest.

How to arrive

Our symposium will be held at the Emilio Pugin Science Building, located on the Isla Teja campus, next to the Botanical Garden.

Getting there using public transportation

From the bus terminal or the city center, you can take the bus to Isla Teja, line 4, 5, 9, or 20. These buses go directly to the university bus stop (Los Laureles/Univ.Austral). To get from the bus stop to the Emilio Pugin Science Building, it is about a 2 minute walk. To do this you can walk southwest on Los Laureles street, turn left on Rector Eduardo Morales Miranda Avenue (walking along the side of the Library and in front of the Science II and Law School buildings).

Arriving by car

In case you are not located and need to arrive by Uber or taxi, it is recommended that the destination is the botanical garden or the Los Laureles/Univ.Austral bus stop and from there walk 2 minutes to the building.

In case of private vehicle, the first thing to do is to go to Isla Teja by Av. Los Laureles and continue straight on Av. Rector Eduardo Morales Miranda. You will find parking available in front of the Emilio Pugin Science Building and surrounding area.

We recommend using the google map route guide to get to the Emilio Pugin Science Building without any problems.
